This 775 sq km long sanctuary lies on the Kerala - Tamil Nadu border. One can expect to see elephant, bison, antelope, sambar and wild boar. The big cats, tigers and leopards are most elusive, though an occasional glimpse can be had in the dry months, when they emerge from the jungle depths for water. Exotic waterbirds as well as hornbills, blue-winged parakeets, whistling thrush and fly catchers are also found near the lake. There are plenty of observation towers set up around the reserve to view wild life. A trip on the launch down the river is the best way to observe the bird and animal life of the Sanctuary.
