| The history of India, is embedded in Delhi. Built and rebuilt, 7 times, over the ages, it is today a city of many parts. Gracious tree lined avenues, dusty crowded streets and imposing buildings. The ancient and the modern, the old and the new are in constant juxtaposition here, not only in the remains of a succession of empires, but equally in the present social structure and lifestyles. New Delhi has some of the finest museums in the country. Its boutiques and shopping arcades are windows to the skills of traditional craftsmen all over the country. The restaurants serve a variety of cuisines to keep a gourmet in good spirits. Delhi is replete with ancient and medieval architectural wonders. Qutab Minar - built in the 12th century, is the tallest stone tower in the country. Purana Qila - this old fort was built by Sher Shah. Humayun's Tomb - one of the finest examples of the type of garden tomb perfected later at the Taj Mahal. Red Fort - this imposing citadel of power built by Emperor Shah Jahan is one of the most important monuments of the Mughal dynasty. Other places worth visiting are Chandni Chowk - a shopping area in Old Delhi; Connaught Place - New Delhi's main commercial centre built during the British Raj; Jantar mantar - an ancient observatory built in stone. |
