At the foot of the Kumaon Himalaya, located in a region of extensive mixed forests famous for their variety of animals and birds, Camp Corbett offers comfortable accommodation for small groups or individual travellers.
You will be made very welcome here. Camp Corbett is run by the Anand family, who are experienced naturalists as well as very hospitable hosts. Great care has been taken to create a small-scale jungle camp which is in harmony with its superb natural setting, overlooking the River Boar and facing the Himalayan foothills.
The mixed deciduous forests surrounding Camp Corbett are a paradise for the naturalist, bird watcher or those who simply wish to spend some time in the special atmosphere of an Indian jungle.
The Kaladhungi reserved forests have always been famous for their resident tigers. It was here that the legendary Jim Corbett - hunter of man-eating tigers and later a pioneer conservationist - made his home. The "Bachelor of Powalgarh", a trophy tiger of record size, prowled through these forests during the 1920s. The largest tiger ever recorded (weighing 850 pounds and now preserved in the Smithsonian Institute) also had his home here.
Fortunately, these forests are still home to the magnificent but wary and elusive cats, together with their smaller cousins, the leopards.
A jungle walk in the company of an experienced guide will frequently reveal pug marks of both tiger and leopard on the forest paths and dry river beds, as well as close sightings of their prey species, which include the graceful cheetal or spotted deer, sambhar and wild boar. Other residents include the sloth bear, Himalayan black bear, python and around 350 species of birds, including Giant Hornbills and many birds of prey.
The magnificent hill forests of Corbett National Park, renamed Corbett Tiger Reserve and managed by Project Tiger, lie 30 km west of the Camp and are easily reached by a day excursion. The flora and fauna of the Park can be viewed by Jeep or elephant back.
A minimum stay of 3 NTS is recommended.
Camp Corbett is a comfortable 6 hr drive from Delhi and can be appended to all of the North India itineraries.
